We are specialists in Community and Workplace Mediation, Conflict Resolution and Training
Brighton and Hove Independent Mediation Service (BHIMS) offers a comprehensive range of services aimed at resolving many different conflicts and disputes.
We have helped hundreds of businesses, families, neighbours and organisation since our service began in 1993.
More than 80% of cases that go to mediation are successful !
Our team of highly skilled and accredited mediators work across Brighton, Hove and into the surrounding area including Lewes, Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven.
We can help:
- Local communities where neighbours or residents are in dispute.
- Families in conflict.
- Tenants and landlords in dispute.
- Local businesses who have a workplace conflict.
- Sheltered housing, care or nursing home providers and their residents.
Need someone to listen to both sides?
Mediation is confidential, fast, effective and affordable. Because we are a charity, our charges are less than commercial organisations. Our job is to help and encourage those in dispute to come up with their own solutions and agreements. We do not make judgments or tell people what to do.
BHIMS is completely independent, confidential, impartial and non-judgemental.
More about BHIMS
We are an independent charity and receive no statutory or direct government funding. We raise our income through bids to trusts and foundations for project work and though Service Level Agreements with local social landlords, local authorities and other statutory authorities. We also seek donations from the residents of the communities we serve and, where our work is not covered by other funding, ask them to pay our costs in order to keep our service sustainable.
Our patron is the award-winning international crime thriller novelist Peter James. Peter supports us with a number of initiatives and is happy to represent us at external forums. He has recently been assisting us with our upcoming mediation film. More information will be posted on our News pages. For further information about Peter please see here.
Our organisation is overseen by a volunteer Board of Trustees – also known as the Management Committee – who meet regularly to ensure the aims and objectives of our organisation are met and that we maintain the highest standards in the delivery of our services across our area. The Board consists of up to ten Trustees elected annually at our AGM. If you would like to find out more about becoming a Trustee, we would be pleased to hear from you.
Our Office Team
Our Office Team are based at our office in central Brighton and are responsible for the day-to-day running and development of our services. They make the initial contact with all the parties involved in mediation cases and support our team of volunteer mediators. We have five part-time members of staff.
We have a team of experienced and accredited volunteer mediators based across our communities who usually work in pairs to help people find a solution to their problems. Our mediators come from all walks-of-life and backgrounds and some have specific qualifications in specialist types of mediation.
