Brighton and Hove Independent Mediation Service

We are specialists in Community and Workplace Mediation, Conflict Resolution and Training

We are an independent charity that has been offering conflict resolution services since 1993.  Our team of skilled and accredited mediators work across Brighton, Hove and the Lewes District, including Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven.  We can help:

  • Local communities where neighbours or residents are in dispute.
  • People in private rented accommodation whose housing is at risk because of conflict.
  • Tenants and landlords in dispute.
  • Local businesses who have a workplace conflict.
  • Senior and supported housing providers and their residents.

Mediation is confidential, fast, effective and affordable.  Our job is to help and encourage those in dispute to come up with their own solutions and agreements. We do not make judgments or tell people what to do. BHIMS is completely independent, confidential, impartial and non-judgemental. 95% of people who engage with our support say they find it helpful. More than 80% of cases that go to a mediation reach a positive outcome.

More information on our services can be found on the links to on the left of this page.   But please first read the advice below about how we are adapting our services to respond to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.

Also please note that we do not currently provide a family/couples mediation service.  For Family Mediation we recommend you contact our sister service  Mediation East Sussex .

UPDATE on support during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis

We are continuing to provide services during the current crisis. With everyone spending more time at home, we recognise that a peaceful relationship with our neighbours is more important than ever.

Due to the restrictions, though, we are changing the way we work.  Support is generally being provided by telephone rather than in person, for the time being.  If you would like to make a referral to us or are experiencing difficulties yourself, then please do get in touch.  You can email us or give us a call.  If we are unable to pick up, please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

It is taking us longer than usual to respond to enquiries. This is because we are experiencing a high number of referrals and we are adapting our service to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.

Our film “Tempest”, below, won the National Mediation Video of the Year 2018. The film which is about the impact of neighbourhood disputes is directed by film maker and mediator Justin Spray.
